52 Cards challenge 2014 - Week 25

I'm running a little bit behind with last week's 52 cards challenge "Whatever the weather", I did make this a few days ago but have been so busy with work and the weather has not been good enough to take photos so I have only just gotten round to taking them.

Patterned paper - Echo Park. Vellum - Anita's. Sentiment - Papertrey Ink.
Cloud cut file #18294, Sun cut file #17341

I already had this card in mind a couple of days before as I was itching to use my new paper smooches rainbow die.

I cut the rainbow shape six times from card stock scraps and arranged them into rainbows, I assembled one on the front of a die cut journaling card from Lawn Fawn and layered the card over a glittered sun from the Silhouette store, the clouds were also cut from vellum on my silhouette using the Echo Park cloud cut file that matches the background paper, I simply duplicated the image, made one slightly smaller and changed the cut line to dotted lines and it mimics stitched clouds.

The sentiment was stamped with an ancient rainbow pigment pad I found in my stash using the PTI Up, Up and Away sentiment set which was then embossed with clear embossing powder on vellum which was overlaid on card. Oh! I forgot to mention that I sewed a little border on the edge of my card stock and went over the printed raindrops with glossy accents. It really is a cheerful card :)

One last thing I thought I would share is a picture I found from a couple of weeks ago of some more crafty goodies I purchased, i'm such a naughty girl!

I have wanted the dainty bow dies for such a long time as well as the Lawn Fawn Let's Polka 6x6 pad, those yummy neon Freckled Fawn enameled dots and how sparkly are those Prima embellishments? I hope I have some time this week for some serious crafting.

Lastly, I created this card from the scraps and pieces I had on my desk from this card.

Happy hump day everyone x

Make The Day Special Challenge

Have you heard of the UK store Make The Day Special? They specialise in importing US stamp brands to the UK, Europe and Worldwide! The best part? The prices are comparable with buying direct but no nasty customs charges.

Here's a sneaky peek at my new goodies that I received this week, now if only I had some time this week to play with them!

Anyway, MTDS has a monthly challenge and here is my entry.

I'd love to sit and write more but I am exhausted after starting my new job this week and need my bed! This card was made with the new Mama Elephant Sweet Havana Stamps and Paper Smooches Friend die.

**All opinions contained within this post are my own and I am not affiliated with MTDS in any way, I am just thrilled to share a great way to buy my favourite US stamp brands:)

Celebrating Father's Day

When it comes to paper crafting I think my dad gets the rough end of the deal, I love creating girly things for my mum, but my dad? not so much. He's a simple kinda guy so I need to make sure the card is special but not at all 'frilly'. Here's what I have come up with this year;

Card base - Papermania. Patterned paper - October Afternoon. Font - Ostrich
Sans. Sketch Pens - Silhouette America. Heart - K&Co.

I had seen the quote on pinterest and loved it and decided to use it as the focal point of the card. I am not a fan of my own handwriting so I used the ostrich sans font and my sketch pens and had my silhouette do all the work. I then overlaid this with vellum and added the die cut gold 'Dad' and finished it off with a little puffy heart sticker.

I'm an only child and was/am very much a daddy's girl (well, I'm also mummy's girl too!) and I hope this conveys to him just how much I love him.

 I also show my Father-In-Law the love and made him this card;

Cardstock - Bazzill. Patterned paper - Mint Julep, Basic Grey. Vellum -
Dear Lizzie. Glitter Paper - American Crafts. Dies - Wplus9. Lawn Fawn and My
Favourite Things. Stamps - Milos ABC's, Lawn Fawn. Sequins - Doodlebug.

I have had the shaped sequins since I started crafting in 2006 and was happy to find a use for them, I stitched them within the vellum pocket, I just adore shaker elements! The flags were made from scraps and the sentiment was stamped with staz-on, I now realise I should have embossed it in blue to make it stand out a little bit more.

The card below was made as I had been wanting to make a card using my new lawn fawn journaling card die with gold mirror card stock, it has such a luxury look to it.

Patterned paper - DIY Shop, Crate Paper. Leaves cut file #9075 Silhouette
America. Card stock - Bazzill Cardshoppe, Papertrey Ink. Stamp - Papermania.
Dies - Lawn Fawn. Washi tape - Freckled Fawn. Glitter paper and embossing
powder - American Crafts.

I'm really pleased with how this came out, I wish I would have used a brighter green for the leaves and I think I should have introduced a pop of colour such as red to add some interest. It will be nice to have this stashed away for giving later this year ;)

Thanks for reading!

Shine Bright! Diamond filled shaker card.

Ok, maybe they aren't real diamonds but I can't stop shaking this card and staring at the different colours in the light!

Card base and chalkboard label - American Crafts. Holographic
and Honeycomb silver card - Payper Box. Vellum - Anita's.
Sentiment - Wplus9. Ink - Versafine. Crystals - Floral supply.

This isn't a new card, but was one of the last ones I made before my crafting drought. I have only just got round to photographing it's different colours in the sunlight, for that reason there are a few pics with this post!

It was quite easy to make. Cut a rectangle of holographic card stock and adhere to your card base.

Take a chalkboard tag and die cut a square in the centre, adhere a square of acetate to the back of the frame, on the inside edge stick foam pads all along the frame making sure there are no gaps.

*Tip - 'dust' the edges of your foam tape where it would come into
contact with the shaker contents, it will stop them sticking.

Add your shaker contents, remove the backing from the foam pads and stick down a square of silver card stock that slightly overlaps the foam pads, adhere shaker to card.

Die cut banner from vellum and stamp sentiment, emboss with clear embossing powder and adhere to shaker.

My crafting drought may finally be over! I have made 4 cards in the last 2 days including my Father's Day cards which I hope to share tomorrow morning, I just need to make the most of the sunlight for my photographs!

I need a pintervention.

Do you ever find yourself in a creative slump? Sit in your space and not know where to start? Have lots of ideas but don't get round to committing them to paper? That's what I am experiencing right now. The last card I made was at the beginning of April and it took 5 minutes, tops, before then, the last time I properly crafted was the end of March, my mojo has officially vanished.

Today I thought I would share two cards that I made for a submission call at the beginning of the year that were rejected, fortunately a third card was picked up for publication :) As I like to prepare all of my submission forms I thought I would include the full product lists and instructions.

I love this card, the colours, the chevrons (yeah, I still dig chevrons), just all of it!

  • Adhere stencil over watercolour paper and paint random chevrons in orange, turquoise, brown and gold, leave to dry. Once dry peel off stencil and adhere panel to card base.
  • Stamp sentiment on vellum strip, emboss and stitch to card base. Wrap gold thread around the vellum panel adding in beads, tie off the thread behind the panel and trim ends.

and here's the next one, a little more simpler in style.
Cardstock: (white) American Crafts. (Cotton Candy) Bazzill Basics Paper. Clear stamps: (Hello sentiment from Mini Blooms), Papertrey Ink. Ink: (Versamark) Tsukineko. Embossing powder: (Gold) WOW! Color media…markers, pencils, pens: (Putty, Dusky Pink Promarkers) Letraset. Paint: (Tarnished Brass, Distress Stain) Ranger. Fibers: (gold thread) Korbond. • Make card from card stock, sew on white panel, place stencil over card and color in random chevrons with coloring pens and distress stain, remove stencil. Sew various chevron pieces to card with gold thread. Stamp sentiment and emboss.

So, back to the mojo-less-ness. I have tried numerous things to try and find some inspiration;

  1. Blog challenges - There are so many great challenge blogs out there, I read the prompts, look at the DT inspiration then at the entries and then feel doubtful I could successfully pull of the theme.
  2. Reading other blogs.
  3. Pinterest.

and that's where things went seriously wrong, I can spend hours on pinterest, pinning random things, targeted searches, following link after link, yet still creating nothing. Julie Comstock on the Cosmo Cricket blog summed it up perfectly in once sentence for me in a recent post she made regarding social media.

"Seeing things on Pinterest takes ideas from me because I don't like to copy. I may have come up with that on my own, but after seeing someone else do it I feel like it's not an option."

This is exactly how I feel, I need to step away, try and avoid crafting sites altogether for a few days to recharge my batteries. Its going to be hard as pinterest is universally used on my laptop, phone and iPad, however, just as I typed that I thought "Why don't you just sign out of the apps for a few days" Doh, that's what I will do (because I can't sever ties with pinterest forever!) I am officially giving myself a pintervention.

I haven't really spent any money on craft items for a while and during that time I had amassed myself a wishlist of new goodies, fortunately I have had the funds recently to have a little splurge (thanks ebay!) and I have now amassed quite a little pile of new things to play with in the hopes that I will feel inspired. We'll see how it goes.

What do you do to kick start your creativity?

Gorjuss Girl for a Gorgeous Girl

My friend Becky's birthday was last week and I haven't got to see her in quite a long time so I wanted to send her a card and some crafty goodies for her birthday. I know that she likes the Gorjuss girls so I purchased a small decoupage kit from Hobbycraft and got to it. I have to admit that this is quite a departure from my usual style, I don't think I have ever decoupaged before, however, I was really pleased with how it came out and I was especially thrilled to hear that she loved it and that's the main pleasure of crafting for me!

Patterned paper - October Afternoon, Basic Grey, Bo Bunny.
Stamp and dies - Wplus9, PTI. Twine - American Crafts. Gems
and decoupage kit - Do Crafts. Rose - Hobbycraft. Washi Tape
American Crafts. Ink - Ranger, Memento.

I was lucky to find all the patterned papers I needed in my scrap drawer, the blue didn't match that well, however a little distressing with some broken china distress ink and I think it goes beautifully. I added some glitter to the hearts and coloured in the white stripes on her tights with a Sakura clear glitter pen, the striped borders were cut from the packaging.

The only problem with this card is the amount of layers, 10 I think! I made a custom envelope with my We R Memory Keepers Envelope Punch Board (I love, love that thing) and it was all ready to go.

Thanks for stopping by,
Ang.

Lacy Wedding Card

Weddings, *sigh* I think, if I could, I would get remarried to my husband over and over just to be able to wear lots of different dresses and plan beautiful weddings just like the ones I drool over on Pinterest! A lovely colleague a work got married the other weekend and I had inquired on the scheme 'lace, pink and mint', how fortuitous that I love that whole combination!

Patterned paper - MME, Cardstock - American Crafts. Cut files - Silhouette America

Once again my trusty silhouette got a work out, the background is cut using 'Grandma's Tablecloth' and the sentiment is 'Mr & Mrs Love Birds', I simply used the offset feature to make a background mat from the same paper I used on the background. I hope the Bride and Groom liked it!

Here's a colour palette on Pinterest that helped inspire me.

I love this combination, if you missed my previous post, you can see my mint and pink Mother's Day card here.

52 Cards Challenge 2014 - Week 13

March seems like it has been such a long month, I guess it's because February was so short, but even with it being a long month I have not really had much time to craft, or take photographs it seems, I made this card for the 52 Cards Challenge on Monday and have only just got around to photographing it.

Patterned paper and die cuts - Crate Paper. Stamps and Die - Avery Elle
(via Make the Day Special) Resin embellishment - Etsy.

Fortunately this came together quite quickly, although I decided to die cut some foam tape for the sentiment and got it all stuck in my lovely new die! I'm looking forward to make a few sets of cards using the lovely Simply Said - Hello stamps and dies over the next couple of weeks.

I hope you have had a relaxing weekend,
Ang.

Happy Tuesday and 52 Cards Challenge - Week 12

Isn't the weather wonderful? Spring has truly sprung, the burst of colour from spring blooms, the shock of pink from the cherry and almond trees, green grass and the dawn chorus, it has to be my favourite season!

Without further ado, here is my entry for this week's 52 cards challenge;

and here is the inspiration image
Now, I am going to admit to cheating a little with this challenge, the card was already in process, all the pieces were ready, it just hadn't been assembled, plus it kinda goes with the orange and the yellow in the inspiration picture.

This is a card for my mother-in-law, whilst I like the colours I am not too happy with the Coming Up Roses stamping, I just can't seem to find the right balance with it. I bought the gathered fabric ribbon on sale, it was the only colour they had that I liked, after using it on this card I knew I needed some more and luckily when I went back they also had it in white, it adds such a soft feminine touch.

Speaking of spring, I thought I would share some of my favourite spring photographs from my hometown.

Happy Tuesday, I hope spring has sprung in your neck of the woods!

52 Cards challenge 2014 - Week 10

I am running so behind just lately. Here are my entries for this week's 52 Cards Challenge, the prompts are wood, plastic and stickers.
Paper - Oh Darling, The Pier, Crate Paper. American Crafts. Flair - American
Crafts. Enamel Dots - MME. Washi tape - Hema. Stamp and dies - Papertrey Ink

Paper and Stickers- Party Day, Crate Paper. Wooden Stars - Studio Calico
Die - Papertrey Ink. Ribbon - Etsy.

I have been having fun with my recent Crate Paper purchases! I think they have to be my favourite manufacturer, it's helped that TK Maxx and Homesense have been carrying a number of their items, along with some great American Crafts stuff.
I've also been lucky enough to acquire some more Wplus9 stamps and dies courtesy of Make the Day Special, it's dangerous to shop there! The other Crate Paper loveliness is from Sarah's Cards.
At Homesense I also picked up some washi tape with mixed prints on it including gorgeous doilies in silver and gold for £2.99. As far as the chalkboard stuff goes I think this is a new line in with other stores, except the price is quite a bit cheaper here.
These are some other little bits I picked up, 1-3 are all from the 99p store 4-5 from The Works and 6 is from Hobbycraft. Tiny sequins for shaker cards, mica looking glittery stuff, microbeads in darling little bottles, cameos, rose ribbon and some gorgeous pearl and diamante embellishments that I'm going to be forced to use (I just want to look at them!). I will add that these purchases are over the space of the past month!

Anyway, nearly bedtime, hope you had a lovely sunshiney weekend.

52 Cards Challenge 2014 - Week 9/Taking Inspiration..

For the 52 Cards Challenge this week Nat has chosen the following picture of a beautifully decorated cake as our inspiration.
Elements to be inspired by in this pic:
  • Colours - white/mint/pink/gold
  • Embossing
  • Doilies
  • Ruffles/pleating
  • Ribbon
  • Fancy buttons/brads
  • Pearls
  • Dimensional flowers

All of these elements spoke to me and said 'Mothers Day Card' (Mothers Day in the UK is on Sunday the 30th of March) I had also been reading one of my favourite blogs by a wonderful Polish cardmaker,  Dorota_MK who makes the most stunningly beautiful cards, tags and projects, I decided that I would also make the card inspired by her style, taking elements from a number of her recent projects and this is what I came up with!

To me that equated to lots of layers and little details like the distressed edges, the vellum doily, the gold glitter swirls, sigh, I really enjoyed making this. It's not my usual style but I loved using some of the pretty embellishments I have accumulated over the years and my silhouette certainly got a workout with the swirls, feathers and rose. I wish I had as much time to devote to every card as I did on this. I think my mum is going to love it!

I need to plan something similar for my Mother-In-Law so watch this space! I am also having fun with Chalkboard products that I hope to share later in the week.

Ang.

Papertrey Ink February Blog Hop Challenge

This month's blog hop theme over at Papertrey Ink is Sweet Spring, here is the inspiration photo.

Cardstock - Hero Arts. Watercolour paper - Cotman. Stamps and
dies - Papertrey Ink. Ink - Ranger, Memento, PTI.

I used distress stain on the background and then spritzed it with water and sewed it to card base. I die cut Birds and Blooms and stamped them with the companion stamps, I cut the legs off of one of the birds and added an extra wing on foam pads so the bird would look like it was flying. I die cut the clouds from vellum and embossed the sentiment in gold and added a small heart. I think it's so cute and I can't wait to send it to a couple who will be new parents soon.

Thanks for stopping by,
Ang.

1 card, 2 challenges.

Today I am entering my card into the WPlus9 Birthday Celebrations Trend Watch challenge and 52 Cards challenge 2014 - Week 8. I am using the sketch from 52 cards and have taken water colouring and enamel dots from the trend watch challenge to make my card.
Stamps - Wplus9 and PTI. Ink - Memento/PTI. Enamel Dots - MME

I decided to finish this card at about 3am which is why the stitching is a tad wonky and needed to be covered with an enamel dot ;)

Happy Sunday,
Ang.

Hero Arts Birthday Challenge

Over on the Hero Arts blog they have a challenge all about birthdays, and there are five category options to choose from. I decided to go with -

Metallic birthday cards or party decor - In celebration of the Winter Olympic Games, add a touch of gold, silver, or bronze to your cards/projects.

and here is my take..

Unfortunately the daylight was fading when I took the picture. I made an A2 acrylic card base and stamped Hero Arts S5362 Dogwood stamp onto the lower two-thirds using StazOn metallic ink in gold, I also stamped a piece of patterned paper from the Crate Paper Little Bo Peep 6x6 pad with the same stamp and ink and adhered this inside the card. I inked a Pink Paislee Artisan Elements label with spun sugar distress ink and stamped Happy Birthday from Hero Arts CL181 Sparkle Clear Messages with gold ink.

It looks so delicate and really shines when it catches the light in the sun, I already have an idea who this card is going to go to!

I really love stamping on acetate and so far the card below that I made last year remains one of the most popular in my flickr photo stream and on pinterest. For more details you can visit the original post here.

Ways with Watercolours - Techniques

I have been exploring some more with watercolours since my previous posts and thought it would be a nice idea to share the techniques with you that I have learned over the past week. This is a super long post from me!

First, here is the card that I am most pleased with. I completely cased the card and technique from the wonderful Betsy Veldman as seen here. I stamped and embossed my image using white embossing powder onto watercolour paper, I then generously applied distress inks in 5 different colours over the image, deliberately going over the lines. Once you have completed this, spray the whole piece with a mini mister to make the inks bleed prettily like watercolours and leave to dry. So easy, right?

There are many ways that you can achieve watercolour effects, even if you don’t own any! Let’s run through a few;

Ink Pads. You can turn any dye ink pad into a watercolour medium. Stamp your ink pad on to a craft sheet/acrylic block/glass tile and pick the colour up with a wet paintbrush. I like this method if I want to watercolour a small element quickly. Distress Inks are made for this, however I use all of my dye ink pads for this method and re-inkers are fantastic.
·         Brush Pens. Brush the colour onto the stamp with your pen, spritz the stamp with water and stamp or stamp and spritz the paper with water or use the ink pad method. This is how I first learnt to watercolour stamp when I started crafting a number of years ago. My Marvy le Plume pens are still going strong!
·         Watercolour Pencils. Well, obviously these are great for this, however I also like to use the shavings when I sharpen the pencil to create paint for a ‘wash’ when I am in a pinch and can’t find a specific colour.
·         Chalks. I have quite a few palettes of chalk cubes which I rarely use. For best results, spritz the chalks a few minutes prior to use and then use a wet paintbrush to thoroughly wet the cube then paint. Leave the chalks to dry and they can be used again for their original purpose.
·         Gelatos. These can be used directly on paper and then you would go over it with a wet paintbrush. I like to slice some of the gelato off the stick on to a Pringles lid, add a little water and ‘smush’ the water into the paint to create a thick paste, this can then be watered down. I’ve had great success adding mica powders to these, and the other great thing? Leave it in the lid to dry and simply wet to reuse, you can make your own custom colour palettes by mixing the gelato colours!
·         Spray Inks. Spray on your sheet and use the ink as is or add a little water.
·         Alcohol Inks. Drop some ink on a non stick craft sheet and go in with a wet paintbrush. This is good for very pale washes.
·         Eyeshadow. I like to use old eye shadows by scraping off some of the powder on to a craft sheet and adding water. I have found that most shadows contain mica so they will add a shimmer to your finish. I picked up some vibrant matte purple and green shadows cheaply that create a really bright effect when used in this way.
·         Food Colouring. Obviously this is an old school staple, I loved mixing my own colours to use when I was a kid, although I find that when you do mix them they tend to turn a sludgy colour. Gel food colouring is even better, especially if you want bold colour.

I am sure that there are many more, these are just the ones that I have acquainted myself with.

This one is easy peasy and super quick. White embossed sentiment washed over with different watercolour paints.

I hope this post inspires you to give watercolours a try, you'll be so glad you did!

Ang.

52 Cards Challenge 2014 - Week 7

Just popping in to share my card for this week's 52 Cards Challenge.

Card - Bazzill. Watercolour Paper - Winsor and Newton. Stamps - PTI.
Embossing Powder - Stewart Superior. Ink - Ranger, PTI, Memento.

This is my take on one of my favorite techniques by Betsy Veldman. Very soft and really relaxing to create too, I just love the Larkspur stamp set.

Thanks for looking,
Ang.

Step it Up!

The birthday celebrations continue over at WPlus9 and the challenge is to Step It Up by adding dimension to your project. I am a big fan of foam pads and don't seem to be able to make a card without them, I have yet to delve into the world of embossing pastes as another way to add texture but I hope to rectify that over the weekend.
Card - Bazzill, Bo Bunny. Flower stamps and banner, Fresh Cut Florals and
Written on Ribbon by WPlus9. Doily Die - Cheery Lynn.

I used two of my favourite stamp sets and also stayed in my comfort zone as per the challenge I missed last week. I popped up the flowers and banner using foam dots to add dimension and used my favourite blue ink combination that I always seem to go back to.

I couldn't bear to throw away the spare pieces so used them up on this clean and simple card.

Papertrey Ink 7th Anniversary Celebration - Part 2

As you may have read I am taking part in Papertrey Ink's 7th anniversary celebrations, read more about it here. This challenge is to create a project that incorporates stripes in some way.
Cardstock - Bazzill. Glitter Tape - American Crafts. Stamps and Dies - PTI.

I used some super sparkly American Crafts glitter tape in stripes and finished it off at the bottom with tiny tags 2 that also features stripes in coordinating colours.

I have a couple more posts planned for this week, including one that covers my new found love of watercolours!

Thanks for stopping by,

Working with Watercolours

As you may have seen from my previous post, I have just discovered the fun of using watercolours with my stamping and WPlus9 has a great step-by-step guide on one of the ways to do this, playing along, I decided to use the lovely Merry and Bright stamp set and dies.

Card - Bazzill. Watercolour Paper - Winsor and Newton. Ink - Memento.

Simply stamp your stamp on to your ink pad, you can then either take a mini mister or a wet paintbrush and spray/brush across the surface then stamp! Easy! I need to work some more on this card to balance it out a little better. It's a fun technique and so easy to do, so much so that I have decided to experiment some more. I have a couple more cards that are currently drying that I will post later!

Card - American Crafts. Watercolour Paper - Winsor and Newton.
Umbrella and Sentiment - Papertrey ink. Twine - American Crafts.

This has been my first experiment with watercolours, it was so much fun but I have so much to learn, I have seen some great tutorials on Pinterest that look helpful that I must look into!

Papertrey Ink 7th Anniversary Celebration - Part 1

Papertrey Ink are currently celebrating their 7th anniversary with a number of contests where you can win gift cards to spend in store or even a year of free stamps! Today I am entering in the recipe card challenge and here is the first combination.

Card - Bazzill. Stamps, Dies and Ink - Papertrey Ink. Twine and Glitter
Paper- American Crafts.

*sigh* in my head it seemed like a good idea, on reflection it is poorly balanced with too much white space, I decided to try again with a different combination.

Card - Recollections, Papertrey Ink. Stamps, Die and Ink - Papertrey Ink.

And again, this is too flat and frankly blah. What can I say? I think my mojo has deserted me! Oh well, here's hoping the card I am working on now turns out better!
